EMC works with their partner, ETM Manufacturing, to configure on-the-fly as needs are identified by their internal customers. ETM builds base cabinets to forecast and customizes each configuration with over 40 individual piece parts that are kitted with the cabinet and shipped within a few days.
EMC2’s Global Test Organization needed a partner that could deliver different configurations with short notice so that they could meet the demands of their ever changing global production teams. They needed responsiveness but also quality and consistency.
Normally, this would require sophisticated forecasting and lots of inventory but EMC wanted to keep costs down and did not have any good forecast of total demand.
ETM Manufacturing uses our lean manufacturing system to maintain minimum stock levels for common components, JIT schedules for stock components and quick turn builds for specialty components.
Within minutes of an EMC release, components are pulled and a cabinets is welded and ground. Simultaneously, panel jobs are released to replace the items that will be used for the cabinet.
ETM is now able to deliver 20+ versions within a 2 week window – or – as little as 2 days. This flexibility also gives EMC2 the opportunity to change configurations after the cabinet has been released.
